Excellence Cluster

The UCP Marjon Plymouth Raiders work closely with Plymouth’s Excellence Cluster view web site here, to help young people in schools around Plymouth. Our players and coaches work as positive role models for the children that we work with, mentoring children and helping in particular with numeracy and literacy projects.

We use basketball as a way of engaging children and harnessing their enthusiasm. We usually work with 10 to 15 schools each year, and our players and coaches spend 2 hours a week in each of the schools. This is split between help in the classroom and basketball coaching, and over the past number of years, it’s proven to be a real winner.

All of our work with the Excellence Cluster is extensively evaluated by University of Plymouth staff, and results have been so good that both BBC and ITV Westcountry featured this in articles broadcast in mid December 2008.
