After Sunday's game
against Mersey Tigers, there are no reported injuries from the team.
Everybody was in an upbeat mood, following the 100-85 win against
the Tigers, and were turning their attention to the BBL Cup Final
this weekend.
Fans
We've got 4 coaches
going up to the BBL Cup Final this weekend. That's in addition to
the list of people that are travelling up by themselves. "We're
really excited about the Cup Final," said one fan. "We went up to
the Trophy Final in Newcastle in 2007 and saw the team lift the
Trophy against the Eagles, and we're hoping to see the same thing
happen again this weekend! Lets go Raiders!"
Player Interview -
Anthony Martin
You've
been to the NIA with the Raiders several times in recent years...
but what is different about this team to the other Raiders teams you
went there with?
Yes, I've been to the NIA plenty of times with different groups of
guys, and every time has been fun regardless of the outcome. Any
time you make it to the NIA then you know it's a big game. The
special thing about this team going into the Cup Final is the
chemistry we have and the joy we get from playing with each other
everyday. Overall the most special thing about this team is our
chemistry off the court which helps a lot when we do play games.
You've been playing some
great basketball lately. What do you put this down to?
I've been playing ok
lately, I just try to do what the team needs on that night to
contribute to help us to win games. Everyday the team and I work
hard at what we do whether it's practice, shoot around or our
morning sessions in the gym. Playing well just comes down to being
focused and working hard. Also being competitive at everything we
do. I am a very competitive person and I hate to lose. So I make
sure I try to perform as well as possible, so we don't lose, so that
means I have to play well in games because I feel as though I am one
of the guys on the team that people look to for motivation when
things are not going well.
You've met Newcastle
once already this season, and that resulted in a big loss for the
Raiders. What will be different about meeting the Eagles in the Cup
Final?
The first
time we played Newcastle was not our best showing which is a
blessing in disguise as they may go into the game thinking we are
the same team they faced a month ago when they beat us. That game we
were also without Mike Ojo and Anthony Rowe was sick. Others didn't
have a good game which is unusual for us. This time around when we
meet them again we will be healthy god willing and a better team
overall. Come January 15th it's going to be a great matchup between
two of the top teams in this country.
A Cup Final
is always a big occasion - for the players, the fans and the club in
general. How much are you looking forward to it?
This is my 2nd Cup Final - these occasions are not promised any
year, I am definitely looking forward to it. This game is the first
chance this season where for someone to get themselves some
silverware. To be the team to do so can make your season a big
success and it comes early in the year with a lot of basketball left
too. The whole atmosphere and week leading up to the final is fun.
We get a lot of media coverage, family and friends are excited, the
city is excited, it's just a great thing to be apart of. Last time I
played in the Cup Final, we lost, and it wasn't a good feeling
leaving the NIA with a runner up medal, so I'm just going to enjoy
the week an see what happens on Sunday.
Has your role on the
team changed at all this season, and if so, how?
My role on this years'
team has been the same as it has been since I have been with the
Raiders. I'm a real calm and relaxed person off the court and I
think that carries over to some of my team mates before games and
during the week leading up to them. I try to keep the guys in the
right state of mind, relaxing and enjoying every moment we have
together. Then when it comes to games, that's when my whole attitude
changes and I'm a totally different person, more focused, more
intense and more locked in with our task in hand. I also consider
myself a leader on this team, I talk to every one during the games,
making sure they're ok, telling them to pick it up and play better
or harder. My biggest role on this team is being the calm in the
storm.
Bearing in mind you
will be staying overnight in Birmingham before the final, what will
you do on the day of the game?
The day of the final will be a hectic day. I'll start my day off by
eating some breakfast and just chilling, watching the news or sports
channel on my computer. Once I'm done with that I'll take a walk
around Birmingham for at least 45 min as I like to walk - that just
depends on the weather though!!! Go check out some shops and just
relax. Then I'll head back to the hotel and pack my bag, watch a bit
more TV then head over to the NIA and enjoy all the events that are
going on that day. I love watching the dunk contest so I'm going to
make sure I'm in the building before that takes place and I will
also check out some of the other game that will be going on too.
Then once the time comes for us to get ready, I'll put my headphones
on listen to some music and mentally get ready for what should be a
good game.
All of the players
got to go home for Christmas. Where did you go and what did you get
up to while you were there?
Over the Christmas break I got to go back to America for 7 days.
Going back home for holidays is always great. Just being around the
family is a joy itself. For the whole vacation I just relaxed and
chilled out with the family. I didn't do anything special, that trip
was strictly just to see the family and enjoy their company.
