Basketball Camp Proves Popular

The
Airwaves Plymouth Raiders December basketball camp has been a
massive hit with over 50 youngsters aged between 8 and 13 taking
part in the 2 day basketball extravaganza.

Lead
by Raiders players Jamie Burchell and Jay Marriott, together with
community coach and former Raiders II player Dave Clift, the camp
was a real hit with the children and parents alike. The camp was
held at the Plymouth Pavilions, home of the Raiders, on the 29th
and 30th December. The participants were all given half
price vouchers to allow families to buy tickets for the Raiders vs
Essex Pirates game at the end of the second day. Most of these
vouchers were used.
“We
try to concentrate on teaching the children the fundamentals of
basketball, but in a really fun and engaging way,” said Burchell.
“The numbers at our camps recently have been fantastic, and that’s
really down to the Hoops 4 Health initiative that we’re conducting
in primary schools. It’s a great sign for basketball in the area
that we’ve got so many children here taking part in the camp, and
we’ve given them all information on the Marjon basketball club if
they’re interested in progressing through to actual teams and
national and local leagues.”
Julie
Sharples, the mother of one of the children was delighted with the
activities. “After Christmas, it was great for my son and his friend
to get out of the house and take part in the camp. They were tired
out by the end of the day, but had a fantastic time and as we were
driving home from the Pavilions, they were already asking if they
could attend the camp that Raiders will be holding over Easter.”
