 Worcester
Wolves made life hard for themselves but managed to snatch an
83-85 victory in the south west against Airwaves Plymouth Raiders
to set up a BBL Trophy quarter final against Marshall MK Lions.
Raiders had trailed for the entire match until the final minute
but threes from Modestas Sidlauskas and, decisively, Rod Middleton
ensured it was Worcester who progressed to the last eight.
The Wolves were soon into their stride scoring the first six
points of the match. Three pointers from Middleton and Sidlauskas
stretched the lead to 4-12 before Raiders hit back with an 8-2
run.
Further long range efforts from Middleton and Sidlauskas, however,
saw the visitors finish the period on a 13-2 tear to lead 14-27.
After exchanging baskets in the opening half of the second quarter
four quick points from Harry Disy gave Worcester their biggest
lead of the match so far at 27-43.
An Allister Gall three and a bucket from Matthew Hilleary trimmed
the gap to 36-48 before Middleton and Sidlauskas combined again to
send the teams in at half time with Wolves 36-52 on top.
Raiders showed great fight after the break as they gradually
whittled away at Worcester’s lead. An 8-2 close to the third
quarter, with four points from Anthony Rowe, brought the score
back to 57-67 heading into the final stanza.
A Danny Gilbert three opened the fourth quarter for Wolves and
they looked to be cruising to victory before Plymouth put together
a superb run.
A 16-3 tear took them into their first lead of the night on Drew
Lasker’s triple (80-79) and Lasker made the gap three at 82-79
before Sidlauskas tied it with a shot from outside the arc.
A Hilleary free throw edged Raiders in front once more, but Rod
Middleton had the last word with his third three of the match to
end Plymouth’s resistance.
