Raiders Development achieve Clubmark Status

The Plymouth Raiders have become number 70 in the total list of Sport England-England Basketball Clubmark clubs!

The Raiders are one of England Basketball’s model clubs having four teams in the EBL (Senior, Under 18, Under 16, Under 14) and one in the British Basketball League, who in their third season finished 5th with a 20 win, 16 loss record. Over the course of the summer they're extending the number of boys teams and they have also committed to have girls teams playing in the Under 16 and Under 18 national leagues and the Raiders Women's team in Division 2.

Raiders head of development Dave Briggs said, “We’re absolutely overjoyed to get the Clubmark Award. It’s a recognition that we have the players’ interests at heart, as well as the determination to grow the club and get more players and volunteers involved."

“The club has grown out of all recognition from a few years ago, but it’s important to maintain the quality of coaching and safety of everyone involved.”

Steve Darlow, National Club Development Manager for England Basketball, said, “Many congratulations to all the volunteers at Plymouth Raiders. This award is one of many this season that has seen a marked increase in the number of Sport England-England Basketball Clubmark clubs - an increase in the year from 39 to 70 (a 79% rise)!”

“As a result of all this good work done by the likes of Plymouth, there has been a clear improvement in the quality of our basketball clubs, particularly at the junior level,” said Darlow.

“The welfare of the young person is now firmly embedded as a basic principle in junior basketball development. The profile and awareness of Clubmark is certainly rising and continues to drive a lot of the club development work.”

EB Regional Development Manager for the South, Sam Spare, said, “I would like to offer my congratulations to Plymouth Raiders on achieving Clubmark. The vigour and efficiency with which the club have approached the award make this richly deserved. I hope to be able to play a part in their exciting plans for the future.”

Briggs admits Clubmark is only the beginning for Raiders:

“This is only the first step in what we’d like to achieve; we’re now Clubmark and 3 Star accredited, and in a couple of years we would like to take this through to 4 Star and finally 5 Star.

”I’d like to thank Sam Spare of England Basketball for his invaluable assistance over the past few months, and look forward to working with him further as we strive to hit 5 Star.”
