The
Heat couldn't quite get over the winning line tonight, as the
Raiders took over after Mike Martin fouled out to seal the game with
a 14-1 finishing burst.
The Raiders came out
of the block the fastest with a 7-0 opening salvo. The Raiders
maintained their lead until James Jones' long 3 pointer with just
under 4 minutes remaining sparked a 12-2 Heat surge. Tony Dorsey
added a further 6 points either side of James Noel's reply, starting
with a big offensive rebound and put back. James Jones steal started
off a move which led to him draining another trey to round off the
run for a 24-20 Heat lead. The Raiders however nailed the last 3
points of the quarter to send the teams to the benches just 1 point
apart.
The Raiders took an
early 1 point lead at the start of the second quarter, which the
Heat quickly countered with a 10-2 run on the back of some tighter
defensive work from the whole team. A couple Danny Gilbert scores
started the run including a one off an excellent assist from James
Jones, and 2 triples from Mike Martin gave the Heat a 7 point lead.
The Raiders weren't
going to be shaken off, and they put together a 6-0 run either side
of a coach technical on Paul James to haul themselves back to within
a point with 3.09 to go. Over the last 3 minutes of the half though,
the Heat finished with a 6-2 run. Tony Dorsey's big offensive
rebound and assist to James Jones after Mike Martin's score, was
countered by Anthony Martin's steal and lay-up only for Dorsey to
then provider again for new signing Parry Lawson to send the Heat in
43-38 ahead at the half.
The third quarter saw
the Heat unable to capitalise on the Raiders only scoring 1 from 8
free throws over the first 4 minutes. They extended their lead to 8
through Mike Martin and a couple of Dorsey free throws, but after a
couple of James Jones free throws to take the lead to 10 the Raiders
struck back with a 12-3 run to finish the quarter. Anthony Martin
started the run from the free throw line, which Gaylon Moore
followed up.
Despite some increased
defensive pressure from the Heat, which forced an 8 second violation
they kept up the scoring. DeAntointe Beasley's 3 point play and a
further bucket from Anthony Martin pulled the Raiders back to within
2. Danny Gilbert's trey pushed the lead back out to 5 points, which
the Raiders cancelled out over the remaining 2 minutes through
Terrence Durham and Gaylon Moore to tie the scores at 54 each at the
end of the third quarter.
DeAntoine Beasley
proved to be the thorn in the side of the Heat, as his 10 points in
the 4th quarter spurred the Raiders on. He and Anthony Martin opened
the 4th quarter scoring to push the Raiders 4 points in front, but
Mike Martin levelled the scores again with 4 of his own. James Noel's
free throw got the Raiders noses in front, only for a big 3 point
play from who else but Tony Dorsey restored the Heat's lead.
A Danny Gilbert foul
sent Terrence Durham to the line where he made both to tie the game.
Seconds later the Heat lost their captain Mike Martin to his 5th
foul, and with it probably the game as their leader was now on the
bench. Tony Dorsey tried to pick up the mantle scoring 5 of the
Heat's last 6 points, but with little support and the only other
scoring coming from Carlton Aaron's only point of the game it wasn't
to be.
The Raiders closed
with a 14-1 run over the last 4 minutes of the game. DeAntoine
Beasley added 8 of those points including the first of 2 triples in
a row from him and Anthony Martin. After Gaylon Moore fouled out,
the run and the game was closed out from the free throw line, as the
Raiders made 4 of 6 from the line including 2 from 2 after an
unsportsmanlike foul by Nerijus Karlikanovas on Jamie Burchell.
DeAntoine Beasley
closed the scoring with 1 of 2 from the line to send the Raiders
back to Plymouth with a 79-67 victory.
