The Plymouth Raiders have been blessed to have many fantastic partnerships over the years, but this month marks the anniversary of a very special one indeed; the 25 year anniversary of the Wolferstans Solicitors’ sponsorship of the Plymouth Raiders.
Plymouth Raiders Founding Director, former Chairman and current club Life Vice President, Keith Mollard, remembers the beginning of the association well.
“At the end of 1992 the Raiders were entering a difficult situation with the finances causing serious concern. We had committed to bringing back Jon Goodemote and adding Kirk Lowry as our import players but finding the money to sustain their involvement was becoming more of a problem.”
Mollard continued, “The Evening Herald was providing excellent support with its reports and previews of matches, and following an interview with journalist Trina Lake a superb article appeared which highlighted the club problems.
“On the day following publication I received a phone call inviting the club to a meeting to discuss how Wolferstans could help. This proved to be a lifeline for the Raiders as it was quickly agreed that the legal company would provide sponsorship for the next two and a half years.“
As the season restarted in January 1993 the team became Wolferstans Raiders and so began 25 years of involvement.
“Wolferstans partners David Gabitass and Roy Griggs were the driving forces behind the move and eventually Roy Griggs was added to the Raiders’ Board. Meetings were held at the North Hill offices of Wolferstans and had the deal not been effected the Raiders could well have disappeared as there were no other offers received.
“There was a spin off in the first full year of the deal as Raiders reached the Final of the National Trophy and the fans enjoyed a day out at the Sheffield Arena where Raiders performed admirably before losing 62-60 to hot favourites, Sheffield.”
Raiders Director, Richard Mollard said, “Wolferstans’ support of the club is truly overwhelming, not only the financial investment they have provided, which at times have been the saviour of the club, but also for their support via legal services, Director involvement and of course, as fans.
“We are delighted to have Wolferstans as our Legal Partners, and we hope this relationship continues to prosper and grow into one that lasts another 25 years.”
Phil Thorneycroft, a Partner at Wolferstans and a former Director of Plymouth Raiders said “Plymouth Raiders has always had a special place in our hearts here at Wolferstans, right from the early days when many of us sat on the benches at the Mayflower sports hall to watch games.
“It has been a privilege for the Firm to have been involved with the Club for the last 25 years and an honour for the team to be known as Wolferstans Plymouth Raiders in the 1990’s. We have seen highs and lows since then, but we have been proud to support a team which has given us so many fantastic basketball moments.
“Wolferstans, like Raiders, believes in supporting and promoting the city of Plymouth and the Plymouth community and it has been a pleasure through our sponsorship to be part of the Raiders family. With Ross and Richard at the helm we know there are going to be successful times ahead for the Club and we are looking forward to continuing our relationship with Raiders for a long time to come.”
