Plymouth Raiders Basketball Club has made its fifth signing of the new era, in the form of 6’ shoot guard, Eddie Matthew.
21-year-old Eddie, graduate of the Newcastle Eagles School of Excellence, started playing for the Eagles in 2012 before making the move in 2015 to BBL rivals, Leeds Force, where he played alongside fellow Raiders’ signing, Louis Sayers.
Last season was a breakout year for Eddie, with his minutes increasing from 5 to over 22 minutes a game, along with his points average jumping to an impressive 8.5 a game along with 1.2 assists.
Eddie, who initially represented England at u17 level, has since chosen to represent Scotland where he joined the team at u-18 level and has his sights set for an appearance at the 2018 Commonwealth Games.
Speaking of signing Eddie Matthew, Raiders Director Richard Mollard said: “Eddie is a great young prospect, and the kind of young player we are looking to attract to the club as we build for the future. He has enormous potential, and I feel Coach Love is getting a great talent which he can nurture and improve as he continues to mature as a player.
“Eddie’s move to Plymouth Raiders also sees him undertake a degree programme at Plymouth Marjon University, so we certainly hope to count on Eddie’s services for a number a number of seasons to come.”
Raiders’ latest signing Eddie Matthew said: ‘I’m thrilled to be joining the new look Plymouth Raiders this season. After talking to Coach Love and the new owners it was clear that the club would be a great fit for me on the court and academically, thanks to their link with Plymouth Marjon University.
“I hope to continue my development here and also start to make preparations for the upcoming commonwealth games as a member of the Scotland squad. I’m looking forward to meeting my new teammates as we prepare for the season ahead.’
Gavin Love, Head Coach for the Plymouth Raiders added: “It’s great to have Eddie on board with us this year, he had his best season to date with Leeds last season where he averaged 8.5 points per game, shooting an impressive 36.5% from the 3pt line.
“Eddie will also be featuring for the BUCS team at Plymouth Marjon University as he will continue his studies in Plymouth this season.
With five players now announced, further signings are expected from Coach Love over the next few weeks as he gears up for the 2017/18 season.
