Plymouth Raiders started their league campaign on Sunday evening with a convincing win over Gloucester City Kings 46-70.
Sunday October 1st was a big day for the Raiders, not only were they celebrating 40 years since their first ever game in 1983 against Merseyside Mustangs they also kicked off their NBL Division 3 league campaign against former Raider’s player and coach Jay Marriotts Gloucester City Kings.
Raiders introduction to Division 3 life may of started on the road but this didn’t holt proceedings. The game seemed a tight affair right up until the third with score being 37-49 in Raiders favour. The fourth quarter saw Raider pull away and put a real marker down on the league scoring 21 points and eventually winning 46-70.
Former BBL Raiders player Tom Woods was top point scorer on the night with 22pts followed by Head Coach and player Gareth Laws with 16pts. Tom Elliott-Smith and Marcus Cronin also got in on the action adding 11pts each.
After an impressive result Head Coach Gareth Laws said “To get the win on the 40th anniversary of the club is a great moment for us all.”
“It was a good contest for us to kick off our league campaign and Gloucester pushed us all the way, the difference for us this week is how we finished off the game.”
“We’ve still got some work to do to get to where we want to be, but I’m confident in the direction we are heading”
“The support we are receiving from the fans so far is amazing and we can’t thank them enough for helping us drive forward”
