Preview – Newcastle Eagles

On Sunday the 21st of October we welcome the high flying Newcastle Eagles to the Pavilions.  The undefeated Eagles are currently perched atop the BBL standings with a record of 4-0 after a big win over Surrey Scorchers on Friday night.

Despite a difficult pre-season, the Newcastle Eagles have been the dominant force in the BBL so far this season, blowing away Cheshire, Glasgow and The London City Royals with ruthless efficiency.  The Eagles also made an impression at the British Basketball All Stars Championships, falling at the semi-final stage to the eventual winners, the Surrey Scorchers.

The Raiders will want to make the most of their home court advantage and any travel fatigue the Eagles may suffer this weekend.  As far as individual players go, one to keep an eye on would be point guard, Rahmon Fletcher.  Fletcher leads the league in assists this season with an average of 12 per game and played a significant role in the stunning 110-60 win over the previously undefeated London City Royals.

The high-scoring Eagles have posted over 100 points in their previous two BBL games, an impressive feat for a team who pride themselves on a solid defence.  The one-two punch of Rahmon Fletcher and Victor Moses is proving to be an irresistible offensive force in the BBL this year and one that is likely to have the full attention of Raiders coach Paul James.

Not to be outdone, the Raiders have their own offensive mercurial in the form of Donte Nicholas who, along with Estonian native Joonas Jarvelainen, have the ability to cause problems for any team in the league.

Coach James will be hoping that the Raiders can capitalise on their impressive home form with another win on Sunday.  Speaking after the latest Raiders win against Glasgow Rocks, James noted the importance of a home advantage.

“It feels great to get the win, we’re trying to make this court a tough place to come and win, and so far, we’re 100% with two wins from two, so it’s a great feeling.”

Tip off time is at 3.00 pm, so if you want to play your part this Sunday, tickets can be found at
