The Plymouth Raiders are excited to announce the additions of Denzel Ubiaro, Matthew Broderick and local star, Stephen Gordon, to the BBL playing squad for the 2017/18 season after successful trial periods.

26 year old Stephen Gordon was born and raised in Plymouth, and a product of former Raiders’ assistant coach, Matt Hatchell.  Having played at national league level with the Tamar Valley Cannons and Plymouth Marjons, he has spent the last two seasons with the Plymouth & District side, Totem Timberwolves, where he was recently crowned with the league MVP title.

Stephen said: “I can’t wait to get started, I grew up in Plymouth and spent a lot of my childhood playing basketball and watching the Raiders, it’s a privilege to now have the opportunity to step on court and play for my hometown club”

Joining Stephen is the exciting 6’3” guard from London, Denzel Ubiaro.  The former England Junior, who played for the Westminster Warriors in Division 1 of the NBL before heading state side last season to study Business Administration at Marshalltown Community College, has arrived in the City to start a three year study of Sports Therapy at Plymouth Marjon University.

The 20 year old, explosive guard has already made his mark on pre-season training sessions, and with three years of study in Plymouth remaining, Denzel is an exciting young addition to the club.

Talking of his inclusion in the Raiders’ squad, Denzel said “I’m more than excited to join the new look Raiders this year. Being one of the youngest players on the team and my first year in the BBL, I’m looking forward to learning a lot from the experienced guys on the squad who have established themselves in the league.”

“I really can’t wait to make my debut this Saturday and Sunday at home to see all the great fans here in Plymouth.”

Plymouth Raiders Coach, Gavin Love said, “I am very pleased to have both Steve and Denzel joining us, Steve has been on the Plymouth basketball scene for a while and impressed me at the Raiders’ open try-out we had this summer. Denzel also attended the try-out and his talent was clear. Both guys have worked extremely hard this last week.”

“Denzel has been a nice surprise for us, a young player with a bright future who will combine playing for Raiders with studying at Marjons University. We look forward to having Denzel here for the next three years and seeing him progress.”

Completing the trio in a green jersey this season is 20 year old, Matthew Broderick, a 6’9” Welsh International forward who is studying Podiatry in Plymouth.  Matthew stepped up to the Welsh senior squad this summer and put in a promising performance as they faced off against Ireland and Scotland, and with two years left to study in the city, he will have the exception opportunity to continue his learning from Coach Love and his fellow Plymouth Raiders team members.

As well as competing for Wales at junior and u23 levels in standard and 3×3 competition, Matthew also featured for the Plymouth Raiders Division 4 team last season, and had a number of 20 plus point games for the development side.

Coach Love said, “it’s great to be able to add young talent to the Raiders roster and especially someone like Matthew who, like Denzel, will likely be here for a number of seasons to come. We look forward to Matthew continuing his development here with the Raiders.”

Matthew added, “I look forward to becoming a part of the Raiders family and playing in front of the great fans that we all know Plymouth have. I will do all that I can to help the team bring back silverware this season.”
