The Plymouth Raiders cement their intention to build for the long term around young, British talent by re-signing Denzel Ubiaro on a two year contract.
Ubiaro, who turned just 21 in March, is the first signing for the 2018/19 season following a rookie year that saw him average 7pts, and just under 2 rebounds in 19 minutes per game.
The former England Junior joined the squad at the beginning of last season after attending the open trial, and has been rewarded with a two year professional contract that also includes a scholarship at Plymouth Marjon University, where he’s about to enter his second year of Sports Therapy study.
As well as representing the BBL side, Denzel also helped Coach Love lead the Marjon BUCS team to an undefeated season that saw them gain promotion, and double the number of players playing basketball at the University.
Coach Love said, “I am pleased for Denzel to have re-signed with us for the next two seasons. Denzel has a good work ethic and this has been evident with the huge improvement he has made this year. I have no doubt we will see big things from him in the future.”
Ubiaro added, “It’s exciting knowing that I will be here again next year with Raiders and having the opportunity to continue my education further at Marjon as well.
“Though it hasn’t been the most ideal season for the team this year, I’ve learned and felt like I have improved a tremendous amount and feel at home due to the support of Coach Gavin and all the staff behind the scenes.
“Knowing that I’ll have the opportunity to play at the Pavilions again with the best fans in the BBL is a privilege and to stay in the lovely city of Plymouth still makes it even better.
“It was no hard decision at all on re-signing and I’m really looking forward to next year with the coaches, staff and also my academics and the BUCS team at Marjon.”
