In May, Plymouth City Council secured funding from the Department for Education to coordinate a city-wide holiday activity and food programme during the 2019 summer holidays to support families with children who receive free school meals. Nationally, only 11 projects were awarded funding and Plymouth was the only successful bid in the South West.
All Fit and Fed holiday clubs will support children on free school meals and will provide a safe and fun environment where they can experience a wide range of amazing activities including sports, dance, arts and crafts and much more.
The Plymouth Raiders 83 Foundation will be running two clubs aimed at those between 9 and 11 years old, one in the morning and one in the afternoon, where although centered around basketball skills and drills, fun and competitions, there will be other sports and activities, including art, crafts and cookery.
A nutritional hot lunch will be provided by the fantastic catering team at Plymouth Marjon, and promises to be one of the most popular clubs across the City.
Raiders 83 Foundation Trustee, Richard Mollard, said, “We’re over the moon to be in a position to work with PCC and Marjon to delivery such a groundbreaking programme this summer.
“We understand all too well the issue of Holiday Hunger, so to be able to play our small part in helping to provide much needed lunches, alongside fitness and activity, is very exciting.
“All the kids will have a great time, learn new skills and meet new friends, and we hope many will get the basketball bug and want to join one of our many junior teams across the City”.
Simon White, Plymouth Marjon Sports Centre Manager, added, “We are really pleased to be working with our partner, Plymouth Raiders on the Fit and Fed programme. We will be providing use of our world class sporting facilities for youngsters across the City, getting them involved in exciting social and sporting activities this summer.”
The four week Raiders’ Fit & Fed programme starts at Marjon on Monday 5th August, and children eligible could attend every day or simply pick and choose which days they’d like. There are limited spaces available, so places will be given to those who apply first.

The Raiders will also be supporting the Fit & Fed Club at City College Plymouth on two afternoons a week, which is aimed at 13-16 years old’s. The club starts on Tuesday 23rd July for four weeks, and the Raiders will be running the Wednesday and Friday afternoon sessions.
