A depleted Raiders team lost heavily in Newcastle on Friday night against a side chasing second place in the championship. Missing Will Neighbour and Dylan Costello due to season ending injuries they sustained several weeks ago and Eric Eaves only fit enough to travel and support the team, Raiders had just seven players whilst Newcastle were coming back to full fitness despite the absence of former Raider Jamal Williams, who also has had his season cut short following injury.
The game opened evenly before the Eagles stepped up a gear and quickly put the game beyond doubt, holding a 33 point half time lead following an impressive 69 points in the first half. Championship MVP contender Jaysean Paige, showed his fitness is improving following a recent injury pouring in 23 of those 69 points in less than 15 minutes on his way to a game high 40 points in just 24 minutes. Paige was supported by five other Eagles in hitting double figures to claim a 118 – 78 win.
Joonas Järveläinen was the standout again for the Raiders scoring 22, claiming 12 rebounds and dishing out eight assists and he was supported by Tre Bowman and Stefan Djukic on 19 each.
Raiders return home on Sunday in their final game of the season when they host the visiting Sheffield Sharks who claimed the final play-off place on Thursday night following a win over Glasgow Rocks. It means both teams finish in their current positions but Raiders will be looking to finish a tough season with a home win whilst Sheffield will be looking for momentum going into the play-offs.
